Walmart Vs Aldi: Baking And Spices Prices
In the baking and spices aisle, Walmart wins by just a hair. Buy one of each item in the chart above, and youll pay a whopping 1% less at Walmart than at ALDI. The raisins alone are what pushed Walmart into the lead, though. If you simply took raisins out of your cart at both stores, ALDI comes out 2% cheaper. Either way, prices are very, very close here.
Note: I only compared oregano as a representative sample of the $1.00-ish spices at each store, but youll see about the same per ounce price differential on most seasonings. At both stores, of course, those $1.00-ish spice bottles are significantly smaller in size than in 2019 neither grocer is immune to shrinkflation.
How much have baking prices changed?
This category was again all over the place: While some items have increased quite a bit, the cost of other items has actually come down. This could be because were still close to Easter, but I checked prices the week after the holiday. Some price changes since 2019 include:
- 48 oz canola oil is up 56% at ALDI up 53% at Walmart
- Brownie mix is up 15% at ALDI up 11% at Walmart
- 5 lb bags of flour are down 17% at ALDI down 19% at Walmart
- Vanilla extract is up 18% at ALDI, down 14% at Walmart
In some cases, these changes seem to have brought prices more in line with each other across both stores: That little bottle of vanilla was a whopping $1.93 more expensive at Walmart than at ALDI in 2019, for instance, but in 2022 it will only cost you $.09 more.
Are Walmart Eggs Bad
And while Walmart eggs are comparable in taste to other discount-priced eggs on the market, they have unfortunately been the subject of much bad press.
Walmart has been singled out by animal rights group Mercy for Animals for using eggs produced by hens confined indoors that have their beaks clipped.
Meat Shortages Especially Beef And Poultry Will Plague Us Again In 2022
Daniels says that meat and poultry are in short supply in many supermarkets. This is due to several factors, with manufacturing plant labor shortages causing most of the issues. Beef will likely see the most shortages because work in beef plants is more labor-intensive, according to Food Business News.

No This Pennsylvania Walmart Didnt Run Out Of Food
If Your Time is short
- Images of empty shelves at a Pennsylvania Walmart led some people to believe they were the result of a food shortage. In reality, there was a refrigeration issue at the store and employees temporarily relocated the perishables.
In a video being shared on social media, a camera pans over a section of a Walmart, showing empty shelves beneath signs for bacon, sausage, eggs, butter and more.
“Ive never seen anything like this in my f——- life,” the person behind the camera says.
“THERE IS ZERO FOOD AT WALMART DICKSON CITY!” reads a Feb. 5 Facebook post sharing the video.
This post was flagged as part of Facebooks efforts to combat false news and misinformation on its News Feed.
Some people commenting on the video blamed President Joe Biden and decried food shortages. Others offered an explanation.
“We were there EARLY this morning and 20 or more workers were taking all the food out of the cases because they said the freezers werent working or keeping anything cold and they needed to preserve all the food,” one person wrote.
Featured Fact-check
A spokesperson for Walmart told us that there was a refrigerant leak that needed to be repaired over the weekend, so the stores employees temporarily removed the perishables and then restocked them.

There May Be An Egg Shortage In 2022

Similar to other food shortages we’ve encountered, COVID-related supply chain issues have interrupted the business side of commercial egg production. Increased expenses , supply shortages, and government regulation have put a strain on the overall bottom line. As a result, producers may be reducing flock sizes, stopping shipping to some states, or selling eggs previously sold to consumers to manufacturers who use them as ingredients in other products, thus reducing the eggs available in supermarkets.

Some of the nearby businesses might decide to permanently close. If this occurs, you have two options: go to another store in your neighborhood or shop online from your house.
Additionally, it is conceivable for your local shop to close for cleaning and sanitizing, then reopen in three days. Your best option is to see if it still works by contacting your local shop before you visit.

What Is A Public Health Alert Or Safety Alert
These alerts are issued to inform the public about potential health risks in food products. These are typically issued in cases where a recall cannot be recommended. For example, a Federal agency may be aware of an outbreak of foodborne illness, but the source has not yet been identified, or illnesses may occur due to improper handling of a particular product and the agency may issue an alert to remind consumers of safe food handling practices.
Will Walmart Abide By Prop 12
The nations most important farm animal welfare law Proposition 12 is the law of the land in California on January 1, 2022. The measure approved by voters in November 2018 bans the extreme confinement of veal calves in small pens, breeding sows in narrow metal crates, and laying hens in bread-box-sized wire cages. Even more importantly, it stipulates that pork, eggs, and veal cannot be sold in the state from farms using these pens, cages, and crates. That means that if farmers in Iowa and Minnesota choose to ship eggs or pork to California, and want to sell their product there, they have to conform to Californias new animal safety and food safety standards.
In the nations biggest marketplace with nearly 40 million consumers will the biggest food retailers be diligent about observing the new law? Walmart is the nations biggest food seller, and this law will test if Walmart can get square with the law when it comes to its own supply chain. Its not a new subject for the box-store giant because several years ago, it committed to the Five Freedoms of Farm Animal Welfare, and that includes giving animals some measure of freedom of movement.
Walmart faces the same question as McDonalds and Burger King and every other food retailer, large and small, that chooses to sell in this biggest of American marketplaces. These companies have a duty to obey the law and California consumers can remind them of that responsibility.

Aldi Vs Walmart: Produce Prices
In terms of fresh produce, ALDI pricing was again better than Walmart pricing on most items. Beyond potatoes and strawberries, however, in many cases that difference was minimal bananas were just a penny more a pound at Walmart cilantro $.03 more a bunch celery $.05 more. And, broccoli and apples were significantly cheaper at Walmart. Averaging prices across all of the produce items I checked, fresh fruit & vegetables at Walmart ran about 4%more than their counterparts at ALDI.
In terms of produce quality, though: In my area, ALDI produce beats Walmarts hands-down. The avocados at ALDI were large and perfect those at Walmart were small and squishy. Strawberries at ALDI were beautifully large and ripe those at Walmart were somehow simultaneously underripe and molding.
How much have produce prices changed?
While pricing on some fruit and vegetables has remained remarkably steady , others have increased dramatically. Since 2019:
- 3 lb bags of yellow onions are up 30% at ALDI up 18% at Walmart
- Bags of garden salad are up 89% at ALDI down 11% at Walmart
- Bags of spinach are up 22% at ALDI up 10% at Walmart
- Bunches of cilantro are up 8% at ALDI up 13% at Walmart
- Bananas are down 43% at ALDI down 47% at Walmart
- Avocados are down 8% at ALDI down 4% at Walmart
Unfortunately, some of the produce prices that have increased the most, especially at ALDI, include dinner staples such as onions, salad, and spinach.

Tell Walmart Shoppers: The Egg Industry Is Violent And Deadly

While youre out shopping, go to the egg aisle at Walmart. When you see customers reaching for a carton, talk to them about PETAs investigation. The goal is to get them to put down the eggs and choose a vegan egg replacer instead.
Heres what you can tell them:

The abuse uncovered at Walmarts egg supplier is shocking but not surprising. Sadly, its typical, so the least we can do is speak up for chickens. Many people who eat eggs would stop if they knew how bad conditions are on farmsbut they probably have no idea. Being confronted with the cruelty of egg production as theyre putting a carton into their basket will likely lead them to change their habitsand youll be able to see the impact of your advocacy in real time.
Shoppers who have a change of heart about buying Walmarts eggs will likely tell their friends and family members about their experience. This leads people to go vegan all the time! In addition to material shortages, labor shortages may also impact grocery shelves in terms of transportation workers as well as grocery workers to stock the dairy case. As a result, you may have fewer options in terms of your usual purchases of milk, cheese , yogurt, and other dairy items.

It Looks Like Food Shortages Have Continued Into 2022 This Is What Might Be Causing The Issue
After some signs of a slow and cautious return to pre-pandemic normalcy last year, 2022 is looking remarkably like fall 2020and that means supply issues at grocery stores. This time the food shortages are scattered throughout the store, so shoppers hoping to get their hands on specific products may find its not that easy right now.
Its spotty, its not a widespread situation, says Katie Denis, vice president of research for the Consumer Brands Association, which represents the consumer packaged goods industry, including companies like General Mills and Kellogg. Its not like at the beginning of the pandemic when people went out and cleared shelves to stockpile and panicked.
Still, there are specific aisles feeling the strain right now. Here are some products to look for during your next grocery run.
