How To Boil Eggs Fast
Half of the time spent when boiling eggs is just waiting for the water to boil, so I like to use a combination of boiling water and steam. To create the steam you only need one inch of water in the pot, which comes to a boil in just a few quick minutes instead of several minutes for a full pot of water. The steam from the boiling water is then trapped under the lid, it surrounds the egg, and cooks the egg just as quickly and evenly as a full pot of water. The quick steaming method allows you to cook your soft boiled egg in just six minutes, or about the amount of time that it takes to start making your coffee or toast a piece of bread.

Is It Safer To Eat Hard
Yes, hard-boiling eggs for 10 to 12 minutes creates the ideal texture, but it also fully kills off any and all bacteria. “From a food safety perspective, you should not consume eggs under 165 unless you’re using pasteurized eggs,” says Trout. Hard-boiled eggs are unequivocally safer to eat than soft- or even medium-boiled eggs . Just like pork or beef, there is some risk associated with consuming undercooked eggs. To test the temperature of eggs, use a bimetallic stemmed thermometer, such as a classic Thermapen, which quickly checks the temperature and displays it on an easy-to-read digital screen.
Food scientists at the USDA recommend cooking hard-boiled eggs even longer to ensure that there are no lingering foodborne pathogens”12 minutes for medium-size eggs, 15 minutes for large eggs, and 18 minutes for extra-large eggs.” However, the longer the eggs sit in hot water, the drier they’ll taste .
How Long For Soft Boiled Eggs
The recipe below is formulated for large eggs that are still cold from the refrigerator. In the U.S. large eggs weigh approximately 56-62 grams. You can use this method for other sized eggs, just be aware that you will need to adjust the time up or down, depending on the size of your egg. Other factors that may affect the cook time include high elevation, the type of cookware used, and starting temperature of your egg. Start with six minutes for large eggs and adjust the time until you find the exact amount of time needed to achieve your perfect soft boiled egg.
The diagram above shows how long to cook large eggs to achieve soft or hard boiled eggs and everything in between.
- 5 minutes: liquid yolk with soft, whites not fully set
- 6 minutes: liquid yolk with fully set whites
- 7 minutes: jammy yolk with outer edges set
- 8 minutes: half set yolk
- 9 minutes: half set yolk
- 10 minutes: mostly set yolk
Using the steaming method, I find 12 minutes to be perfect for a hard boiled egg with a fully set yolk. If you prefer to use a full water bath instead of the steaming method, check out my tutorial for hard boiled eggs.

They have a solid white with a gelatinous yolk, and they’re made in the same fashion as the soft boiled eggs. Keep an eye on the temperature of the water and be careful not to overfill your pot or it will take longer.

Eggs At Room Temperature Are Best

It also depends on the temperature of the egg. It takes longer if you have just taken the egg out of the refrigerator. A raw egg need not be stored at minimum of +5°C â as in the refrigerator. It should only be stored at max. 12 ° C.
If you have a refrigerator-cold egg in boiling water, there is a great risk that the shell will crack. Therefore, take the egg out of the refrigerator 10-15 minutes before boiling. If you forget to take the egg, you can also dip the wide end of the egg in lukewarm water before you get it in the boiling water. It reduces the risk.

Learn the best method for how to boil eggs to produce the perfect hard boiled egg every single time without any fuss.
Step 1: Place eggs in the bottom of a saucepan. Be sure not to crowd the eggs in the pan. They should fit comfortably.
Step 2: Fill the pan with cold water, 1 inch above the eggs.
Step 3: Bring the water to a rapid boil on the stovetop over high heat.
Step 4: Once the water comes to a boil, cover the pan with a lid and remove the pan from the heat. Do not lift the lid. Set a timer for the type of boiled egg you want, from 4 minutes to 12 minutes.

Perfect Soft Boiled Egg Tips
- Cook them how you like them. My definition of a perfect soft boiled egg might not be the same as yours, and thats ok! It all comes down to the consistency of the yolk. I like mine to be gooey and jammy, with some parts runny and some parts starting to solidify. To achieve this texture, I cook mine for 7 minutes. If you prefer a runnier yolk, cook your eggs for 6 1/2 minutes.
- Watch the water. Have you ever cooked eggs in rapidly boiling water? Did they crack? In this recipe, make sure the water maintains a gentle boil. It should be bubbling, but not so hard that the eggs bounce around. If the water starts to boil too fast, the shells will break against the bottom of the pot.
- Dont skip the ice bath. For the sake of convenience, it might be tempting to skip the ice bath in this recipe. But trust me, I wouldnt ask you to do this step if it wasnt necessary. The ice bath stops the cooking process, so the eggs keep their crave-worthy runny yolks, and it makes them far easier to peel. Its super easy and totally worth it.

To Easily Peel The Eggs
There are a couple of tips I use for easy to peel boiled eggs.
- First, never skip the post-cooking temperature shock with ice water/cold water as this not only is great for texture and color, but it also helps make the eggs peel easier.
- You can also lightly crack the eggs before placing them in the ice water, which can help them soak up a little water and lead to easier peeling.
- You can use a thumbtack to prick a tiny hole at one end of the egg before boiling them . Ive found this method almost always leads to shells that are FAR easier to peel.
Note Older eggs also tend to peel easier, usually ones that have sat in the fridge for at least a week before boiling.
To peel the eggs, I like to tap and press them against a surface and roll lightly back and forth. Do this lightly so that the shell cracks but without breaking the egg whites. Once peeled, rinse the eggs to get rid of any remaining tiny bits of shell.
