And costumed characters will be roaming the grounds, including Disneys Doc McStuffins, Dr. Seuss Cat in the Hat, Sonic the Hedgehog, Snoopy and Charlie Brown, Cookie Monster, The Minions and the Washington Nationals Racing Presidents.
Announcing the theme on Twitter last week, the first lady said, “As a teacher, my heart is always in the classroom.”
To mitigate crowds, Monday’s event was broken into five sessions starting at 7:30 a.m. and ending at 6:30 p.m. Still, it comes amid concerns the president himself could catch COVID as some in his circles in Washington, including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, have tested positive in recent weeks. The White House has shifted its messaging to acknowledge the president could get COVID but argued the concern for illness is lessened since he’s vaccinated and double boosted.
Former President Donald Trump’s White House canceled the event in 2020 “out of an abundance of caution,” and Biden canceled it last year when vaccines weren’t yet widely available. The tradition dating back to Rutherford B. Hayes’ White House has also been canceled in its 144-year history in wartime and inclement weather.

The White House Easter Egg Roll is a tradition that dates back to 1878. Originally, young children in Washington, DC would flock to Capitol Hill every Monday after Easter for egg rolling and a day of activities. Members of Congress grew tired of the growing crowds and passed an Act of Congress prohibiting egg rolling on the Capitol grounds. The event was then moved to the White House after President Hayes was approached by young children asking to use his backyard to roll eggs. Nearly every Easter since, the White House has invited young children to roll eggs on the White House lawn.
Today, the Easter Egg Roll has grown from a few local children rolling eggs to the largest event held at the White House. The Easter Egg Roll promotes healthy and active living and is designed for children 13 years of age and under. An online lottery is conducted each year to award tickets for the event. Signing up for the lottery and event tickets through the lottery are both free of charge.

A group of hard-boiled congressmen literally protecting their turf got the annual Easter tradition rolling.
On Easter Monday in 1876, upwards of 10,000 children with the day off from school marched toward the newly completed cast-iron dome of the U.S Capitol toting baskets abounding in a rainbow of colorfully dyed eggs. They had come to carry on a peculiar holiday tradition that had arisen in the nations capital during the 1800s in which young revelers rolled hard-boiled eggs down the hills of Washington, D.C., to see which ones traveled the farthest without breaking. And nowhere in the District of Columbia was the egg-rolling any finer than on Capitol Hill.
All day long, screaming children rolled their eggsand themselvesdown the grassy embankment on the west side of the Capitol grounds. The noise was so great that in the House and Senate Chambers it drowned all other sounds, reported the St. Louis Globe-Democrat. The business of the country ground to a halt as congressmen exited the building to witness the commotion and, even worse to them, the ensuing destruction. The throng of frolicking children wore the grass completely bare and left the terrain more scrambled than scrambled eggs.

Where Is The White House Easter Egg Roll
The WH Easter Egg Roll is always held on the South Lawn of the White House. The South Lawn is actually a national park. Due to the holiday and the event itself, the park offices were closed.
I mention this only because if you have a National Parks Passport and are hoping for a stamp or a Junior Ranger badge, you cannot get either during this event.
Unfortunate, but I get it.
We were admitted on to the South Lawn about a half-hour past our scheduled time, but finally, we were in. There are lots of kids activities to do. Crafts, dancing, obstacle course, story time and more.
And of course, the egg roll itself, what everyone comes for. Everything is pretty well organized and lines move quickly once you are inside.

Where To Park Near White House
You have a few options. My son still needs a wheelchair for endurance, and its a big honkin thing, so our options are limited. In other words, I didnt want to lug this big stroller onto a Metro.
Parking farther out from the city and taking the Metro in is an option. We chose a very expensive parking garage about two blocks from the White House.
We paid for the convenience. I had been there before, it was a comfort zone for me and reduced our hassles. There is on-street parking all over the place, as well as parking garages, availability and pricing varies. With a big event like this, I didnt want to take chances.

How to get to the Easter Egg Roll:
There is no White House Metro Station. The closest metro stop to the tour entrance is Metro Center , which is just a 7-minute walk.
When you come up the escalators, you will be facing 13th Street. Take 13th Street south and make a right turn on E Street and proceed straight until you reach 15th Street.
McPherson Square Metro station is also close to the White House. We strongly recommend using our Google Map for directions to the entry point.
Mass transit is recommended for reaching the White House. If you must drive, you can find a parking spot at a nearby garage through a service called SpotHero.
This website allows you to reserve guaranteed parking spots ahead of time, often for a cheaper price than the garage itself would charge.
All guests will enter the event from the Ellipse and will have to go through a security screening process.

SPRING GARDEN TOURS
The President and First Lady will continue the annual tradition of opening the White House gardens and South Grounds to members of the public for Spring Garden Tours. This seasons tour weekend is scheduled for 10:00 AM ET to 4:30 PM ET on Saturday, April 9 and Sunday, April 10.
These tours are free and open to members of the public however, a ticket is required for all attendees, including small children. The National Park Service will distribute free, timed tickets at a tent stationed near the Ellipse Visitors Pavilion each day beginning at 8:30 AM ET. The entry point for all guests will be located near the intersection of 15th Street NW and Constitution Avenue NW. Tickets will be distributed, one ticket per person, on a first-come, first-served basis.

So, did you see..him? Ive been asked that several times, and no. Apparently, the family comes out once or twice during the day, but it wasnt while it was our turn on the South Lawn.
I have no data to back this up. But, the rumors are that if you are the first group in the morning, or the last group in the afternoon, you have a better chance of the First Family coming out to greet you. Which makes sensethey likely are at work and school during the mid part of the day.
Overall, it was a great day though. The weather was perfect. My kids had a great time, we had a great time and Im happy that my family did this. Taking Kevin there was definitely a step outside of my comfort zone. But as usual, I always feel great when I accomplish it.
When you apply for tickets via the lottery, you will have to rank your preferences for time slots. You may want to try the first or last time slot to increase your chances of seeing the President.

White House Easter Egg Roll Returns After 2
The White House hopes to stir up some “egg-citement” when the Easter Egg Roll returns on Monday after a two-year, coronavirus-induced hiatus.
President Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden expect to welcome about 30,000 kids and their adult chaperones for the egg roll, an egg hunt and other activities.
The first lady, who is also a teacher, has named it the “Egg-ucation Roll,” the White House said, and is turning the South Lawn into a school community with a variety of educational stations.
It’s the first Easter Egg Roll to be hosted by the Bidens, who are expected to address the crowd and join in some of the fun, although rain was in Monday’s weather forecast.
The COVID-19 pandemic led the White House to cancel the event in 2020 and 2021.
Besides the egg roll and hunt, the all-day event will include a schoolhouse activity area, a reading nook, a talent show, a place to teach children about farming, a photo-taking station, a physical “egg-ucation” zone with an obstacle course and other exercise stations, and a “cafetorium” where children and their families will learn to make treats.
The “egg-stravaganza” will get a celebrity splash through the participation of “Tonight Show” host Jimmy Fallon, singer Ciara and actor-singer Kristin Chenoweth.
Members of the general public received tickets through an online lottery.
Self-guided, public tours of the executive mansion also resumed on Friday in a limited fashion, after they also were halted in 2020 because of the pandemic.
