In addition to your nose, your eyes are a valuable tool for telling whether an egg is good or bad.
While the egg is still in its shell, check that the shell is not cracked, slimy, or powdery.
Sliminess or cracks can indicate the presence of bacteria, while a powdery appearance on the shell may indicate mold .
If the shell appears dry and undamaged, crack the egg into a clean, white bowl or plate before using. Look for any pink or iridescent discoloration in the yolk or whites, as this may indicate bacterial growth .
If you notice any signs of discoloration, throw the egg out and wash the bowl with hot, soapy water before testing a new egg.
You can also check to see if the whites or yolk of the egg are runny. This is an indication that the egg is old and that the quality has declined. But this does not necessarily mean it has gone bad, and it can still be perfectly fine to use .
Summary
In addition to sniffing an egg, check its shell for signs of bacteria and mold. Inspecting the whites and yolk for discoloration is also a good strategy.
How To Tell If Uncracked Eggs Are Bad
If you want to figure out whether your eggs are fresh without cracking them open, there are luckily several ways you can do this.
One of the easiest ways is to do the egg float test. Some people believe the egg float test to be a myth while you shouldnt bet your life on this test, its a good way to get a general idea of whether your eggs have gone bad.
To do this, place the egg in a glass of water. A fresh egg will sink, while a bad egg will float. This has to do with the distribution of gasses in the egg that builds up as it ages.
Another way to tell if your eggs are fresh is to candle them. This is a helpful strategy if you arent planning on eating your eggs but instead want to incubate them. Candling eggs is simple all you need is a bright source of light in the darkroom.
Simply hold the light up to the large end of the egg. Tilt the egg, turning it left to right. Youll be able to see the size of the air cell in the egg.
The fresher the egg is, the thinner the air cell will be. It will tell you how fresh the egg is but may not give you a good idea of whether its spoiled or not you would need to crack the egg to get a good idea of spoilage.
A final option is to hold the egg to your ear and gently shake it. If its fresh, it wont make a sound. But if its on the older side, you may hear sloshing inside the egg.
Signs Of Bad Egg Quality
There are many hormones that play a role in fertility and egg health. Estradiol and Anti-Mullerian Hormone are especially important biomarkers. Estradiol is a form of estrogen and may indicate PCOS or poor egg quality when found in high levels. AMH testing reveals how many eggs you have left or on reserve. While this is better for measuring egg quantity, a high AMH may indicate Polycystic Ovary Syndrome , in which case women can have higher amounts of poorer quality eggs.

How Ovarian Reserve Testing Works
A test to check your ovarian reserve usually involves a vaginal ultrasound and blood tests to measure hormone levels, which must be conducted when a woman is menstruating .
Between the ultrasound and blood tests, a doctor can determine how many eggs you might be able to grow in one round with the help of hormones. While a 21-year-old woman might grow 30 to 40 eggs in one round, by age 40, that number drops to six or eight eggs. The older you get, the harder it becomes to produce eggs.
Bear in mind that having a low ovarian reserve now does not necessarily predict your pregnancy chances for the future it simply predicts how many eggs you can grow now. Some women may have a low ovarian reserve but then conceive naturally.
Clomiphene Citrate Challenge Test

While some ovarian reserve tests solely focus on current hormone levels in women, other tests gauge the ovaries response to external stimulants. Sometimes, specialists may give a woman a medication known as clomiphene citrate. Afterward, blood is drawn to test a womans FSH and estradiol levels. Again, high levels of either hormone before or after the medication is administered can indicate an underlying problem with egg quality.

The 7 Signs You Have Poor Egg Quality
Trouble Conceiving
If youre having trouble conceiving, it could very well be that you have poor egg quality as the underlying reason for why you havent been able to conceive yet.
Anovulation/ Missing Periods
Missing your periods or extra long cycles can be a sign that youre not ovulating. This could be because your eggs are not developing properly or you may have polycystic ovaries which could result in eggs that are damaged and not able to make it to the ovulation stage.
Recurrent Miscarriages
Having more than one miscarriage back to back could be a sign that the eggs you are producing are anuploid or abnormal. Naturally, your body is designed to prevent such fetuses from implanting in your uterus on one hand. On the oe the other hand, if abnormal eggs that are fertilised do implant, they may also be rejected and aborted by the uterus, resulting in a miscarriage as well.
While there are other resons you may have a miscarriage, even if you have perfectly normal eggs, having recurrent miscarriages is one of the signs you should be aware of.
Over 35
The most commonly used indicator that you have poor egg quality is a womans age. Even if you have none of the other signs of poor egg quality, many doctors and clinics will automatically sum up the quality of your eggs to poor egg quality.
However, this is not always the case, and is a blanket assumption that can prevent many women from even attempting to try to have a baby with their own eggs after 35.

Achieving Good Internal Egg Quality
Good internal egg quality can be defined by yolk color, albumen quality, and vitelline membrane strength. Genetics play an important role in resulting egg quality, but how do feed and management factor in?
Depending on where you are in the world, consumer preferences will dictate desired egg color and egg size however, good quality eggs should always be free from internal blemishes such as blood spots, pigment spots, and meat spots. Within Hendrix Genetics breeding department, more than 50 traits are examined within our R& D facilities that are linked to egg quality.
This large collection of data ensures that the best birds are selected for producing good quality eggs. Genetics play an important role in resulting in egg quality, but management is another key factor.
Yolk color and quality
Health and management are also important factors in achieving good internal egg quality. Egg yolk colour can be controlled using carotenoids, whether from synthetic or natural origin, to achieve the desired yolk colour. Carotenoids bring colour to the egg, and they also modulate the anti-oxidant potential of the eggs, which can affect embryo development as well as enhance the yolks health benefits.

Day 3 Fsh And Estradiol
The most basic blood test for a womans fertility, blood is drawn on the third day of your menstrual cycle and the levels of follicle stimulating hormone and estradiol are measured. FSH helps control your ovaries production of eggs. If the level of FSH is high, this may be an indication of poor egg quality and quantity. Estradiol is the primary female sex hormone and a form of estrogen. High levels of estradiol may also indicate poor egg quality and quantity, or that estradiol is suppressing your bodys production of FSH, which may make it harder for your ovaries to respond to fertility medications. Low levels may be a symptom of polycystic ovary syndrome or hypopituitarism.
How To Determine The Quality Of Eggs
While there is no accuratemethod to determine the quality of eggs precisely before extracting them, thereare some hormone indicators:
However, it must be noted here that even women with poor ovarian reserve can conceive, if the few eggs they have are good quality.

What Does A Bad Egg Look Like

Reading Time: 6minutes
If youve ever wondered how to tell if eggs are bad or not, youre not alone. The internet is awash with tips, tricks, and partially informed answers that may or may not be correct. Today I hope to clarify a few things. Firstly, lets define what Ill be calling a bad egg. Ill then explain the biology behind what makes eggs go bad, How to tell if eggs are good, and finally, well cover the basics of safe egg handling.
What Is a Bad Egg?
For the sake of this article, a bad egg is an egg that is inedible or unsafe to eat, such as a rotten egg. Additionally, the FDA and USDA both recommend that all eggs showing cracked shells or visibly dirty shells should be considered a bad egg, and well discuss why.
All About The Shell
Eggshells are a porous structure by design. This porous surface allows things such as air, moisture, and some contaminants to pass through. When laid, the hen also deposits a thin protective film over the shell known as the cuticle or bloom, which serves as a natural protective barrier. This cuticle is not completely impenetrable, so regardless of if you wash away the cuticle layer or not, things will traverse that porous shell eventually.
Just because an egg floats doesnt mean its gone foul. It might mean its old and dehydrated, but there are situations where a fresh egg can float. Likewise, an egg that sank could be perfectly good, gone rotten, or even have a developing embryo.

Hormone Testing To Assess Egg Quality
Three simple blood tests can check hormone levels and reveal more information about egg quality. These tests may also help diagnose infertility in a younger woman, who ordinarily would not be experiencing diminished ovarian reserve or poor quality:
- Basal FSH. FSH is the main hormone involved in producing mature eggs in the ovaries. If this test reveals excessive levels of FSH in the body, it is a signal that the brain is trying to boost poorly performing ovaries into action.
- Estradiol. Estradiol is the most important form of estrogen found in the body, and is responsible for maintaining healthy eggs in a woman’s ovaries, as well as for facilitating a healthy pregnancy. If this test shows high levels of Estradiol, it indicates a problem with egg numbers and/or quality.
- Anti-mullerian hormone . AMH is a blood test that directly measures ovarian reserve. It is produced directly by early stage ovarian follicles. High levels are favorable, while low levels indicate decreased ovarian reserve. AMH may be the best measure of the menopausal transition and ovarian age. It may also be useful in predicting ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome, the effects of chemotherapy, and in determining the treatment of PCOS.
Some of these pre-fertility tests can be done by your primary care physician or gynecologist before seeing a fertility specialists.
Diet To Improve Egg Quality
The two most common ways that diet damages eggs are blood sugar issues and inflammatory foods. Both factors disrupt hormonal balance and interfere with the development of healthy eggs.
Maintaining normal blood sugars is fairly straightforward if you follow a few simple guidelines.
Focus on a diet that includes:
- No sugary or processed foods
But what is an inflammatory food? And why is this an issue?
Some foods will trigger inflammation, which is like a fire inside the body. The body uses cortisol to put out the fire, but that cortisol also suppresses the hormones involved with healthy egg development. The two most inflammatory foods are gluten and dairy, and they can trigger inflammation even when you do not have a specific allergy to them. Eating these foods can make it harder to produce a healthy, high quality egg.
So, what do I eat?
The best all-around diet that supports both healthy blood sugars and limits inflammation is a Paleo diet. Paleo is a whole foods approach that offers a lot of options, yet avoids the foods that tend to work against egg quality. There are many great resources available if you are new to a paleo diet, including the Whole30, which has books and a website with recipes. For our patients, we like to make things as easy as possible. We start with a food journal, and then we offer a short list of critical steps for producing healthy eggs.

How To Tell If Eggs Are Bad After Cracking
One of the easiest ways to tell if your eggs are fresh is to crack them into a pan or bowl. Take a close look at the egg to figure out whether its fresh.
There are some pretty obvious signs that an egg has gone by its expiration date. You will want to avoid eating eggs that have cracks, as this makes it more likely that Salmonella bacteria has entered the egg itself.
A fresh egg will have a bright orange yolk along with thick, cloudy whites. Old eggs wont stay together in a uniform fashion when you crack them in a pan instead, theyll spread way out. They might look thin and watery. The yolk is also more likely to break.
A rotten egg also has a telltale, signature smell. Youll notice a strong sulfur smell in particular. This is because, as the egg ages and breaks down, it produces hydrogen sulfide gas. If you detect this smell, toss your eggs.
