Get To Know The People Growing Your Food
Many generations of farming experience have gone into creating our growing methods, allowing us to pack maximum flavour and nutrition into every bite of our meats. We think youll notice the difference even compared to other natural growers but especially relative to the factory-farmed meats that you see at most meat counters.
Randy and Ang Martin are the torchbearers for this generation of farming excellence. Randy comes from 10 generations of livestock farming, and is the current steward of the Whispering Meadows herd of Black Angus cattle, as well as our state-of-the-art certified organic chicken barn.
We have also partnered with some of our neighbouring farmers, who we know and trust to uphold the same standard of excellence with natural & organic growing methods, to bring you our pasture-raised goat, lamb, pork, eggs, and dairy.
We have a rigorous certification program for all of our suppliers, our butchers, and our processors. Our production practices include food-safety guidelines developed by the Verified Beef Production Plus program. And we have a Health Management Protocol in place to actively maintain the health of all our animals.
We want to always be 100% sure that we are bringing you the very best meats that you can find anywhere.

Finding The Right Support
Though Patterson has some help from his parents and fiancé, Roaming P Farm is pretty much a one-man operation, which makes the support that Vital Farms offers even more valuable. The company provides a farm support crew that is available to help farmers set up and answer questions as they come up usually answering texts or calls within an hour, Patterson said.
Vital Farms’ care for its farmers is an example of the company’s practice of “Conscious Capitalism,” by which it considers the long-term sustainability of each of its stakeholders farmers and suppliers, customers and consumers, communities and the environment, crew members and stockholders in its business decisions.
“The people that work for Vital Farms actually care about the farmer because if they help the farmer out, then obviously the birds are helped as well,” he said. “That’s something that sets Vital Farms apart.”
As he approaches the one-year mark of working with Vital Farms, Patterson is still learning but looking forward to what’s next. Ideally, he would like to expand and build another barn at some point. “I’m excited for the future,” he said. “I’m excited to see how far this goes and how far it’ll take me in life.”
The History Of Vital Farms

The founding of Vital Farms began in 2007 with Matt and Catherine. After a decision to get back in touch with their roots, the couple decided to pursue farming on their Austin, Texas land. Once they had their chickens laying eggs, they began to sell their products to local Farmers Markets. Their popularity at these sales attracted the attention of Whole Foods.
Whole Foods picked up Vital Farms products to be sold in the Midwest by the end of 2008, and the other store locations followed in 2009. With this progress, Vital Farms made it possible to bring pastured, organic eggs to locations throughout the county, which was by expanding the amount of farms they held across the country. Matt and Catherine pride themselves in working closely with the caretakers of the other farms, which helps them produce an authentic product, but without the hazardous living situations that other chickens may face without a pasture.
At this time, Vital Farms partners with 90 independent family farmers, which helps them provide fresh and healthy eggs around the country.

What Happens If A Hen Becomes Ill
We believe that it is our obligation to treat sick animals so if our hens become ill and it is possible to treat them, we will always use natural remedies, such as oregano and apple cider vinegar. These natural remedies usually work well and typically will take care of most health issues explains OHayer. However, if other treatments are needed we will do so only under the recommendation and strict guidelines of our veterinarians and those hens no longer lay eggs sold by Vital Farms.
How Whole Foods Favorite Vital Farms Made Pasture
This story appears in the May 30, 2018 issue of Forbes.

On a sunny afternoon at a 25-acre family farm near Paris, Texas, Matt O’Hayer is crouching in the mud to play with the hens. As he pets one, dozens swarm around him, clucking and cooing. He coos right back. “Hey, girl,” he whispers. “Good girl.” O’Hayer, the 62-year-old founder of Vital Farms, is checking in on one of the independent farms in his network of 120 that produce eggs to Vital’s exacting specifications.
Moving inside the farm’s chicken barn, O’Hayer meets thousands more hens, each of which lays an egg every 28 hours inside her own private nesting box. A conveyor belt runs underneath the boxes to catch the eggs, and as O’Hayer points out proudly, there’s a dark curtain in front of each box: “Girls like their privacy,” he says. At Vital Farms both the chickens and their farmers are treated differently. “People say chickens don’t eat grass,” laughs O’Hayer, clad in red flannel and jeans. “I’ve heard that for years. Whole Foods used to tell me that. They love it.”

How Is Vital Farms Different
The obvious way that Vital Farms is different from most companies is that their animals are treated humanely and safely. There are multiple cow herds in each farm, which adds up to about 90 cows per herd. Essentially, each farm makes sure they provide enough space and nutrients for each of their cows and chickens to roam freely. In order to produce the milk needed for butter, the cows are milked twice a day, either with milking equipment or by hand.

What Is Vital Farms
Vital Farms started as a trip to the Farmers Market, and slowly grew into a nationwide effort to bring healthy eggs and butter to the general public. However, the makers distinguished themselves from the competition by maintaining ethical and humane treatment of their animals. Less humane treatment from other egg and milk product distributors has been criticized for the last decade or so, with many companies treating their animals in a way that is unsafe and unkind.
The makers of Vital Farms wanted to change the way that farmers produce their animal goods, so they pursued the change themselves. Vital Farms also helps to bring business to the local farmers across the country, employing the farmers from family businesses, who must adapt to the methods that Vital Farms uses for a wholesome harvest.
The company understands the need for chickens and cows to be able to roam freely. By allowing them to roam as they naturally would, you actually change the taste of the products as well. Vital Farms is a specialty company, and they presently only produce eggs and butter, which makes their costs slightly higher than the regular eggs and milk products that are sold in stores.
