German cockroach mothers typically drop the egg case only 24 hours before the eggs are ready to hatch. Sometimes, the eggs start to hatch even before the adult cockroach has released the case, which can make it look as though cockroaches give live birth, although they dont.
Other species of cockroach, including the American cockroach, deposit the egg cases in tucked-away corners and glue them into place with their saliva. German cockroaches are more careless.
After all the trouble the females go to to carry the egg case around with them, once the eggs are ready to hatch, theyre on their own. The female cockroach will leave the egg case more or less anywhere slightly hidden and move on with her life.

Holes In Pipes And Vents
Another common entrance point for roaches is through holes in pipes and vents. If you live in an older home with vents that have holes or dont properly seal, its an invitation for roaches to come inside.
Check your vents when you replace or service them and keep an eye on pipes and plumbing fixtures for holes or other potential roach access points.

Cockroaches lay one egg case at a time. Often about one ootheca per month, but this varies by species.
The egg case actually contains many eggs. Here is the egg count per oothecae by species.
- American cockroaches: 16 eggs per oothecae
- Brown-banded cockroaches: 17 eggs per oothecae
- German cockroaches: 48 eggs per oothecae
- Oriental cockroaches: 16 eggs per oothecae
- Smoky brown cockroaches: 45 eggs per oothecae
Dust Bait And German American And Brown Banded Cockroaches
Apply dust bait inside crevices along the edges and corners of cabinets.
Focus on the wall or floor junction behind the refrigerator, stove, and dishwasher.
Youll also want to apply a thin layer into openings where pipes enter walls.
Another great place to add dust bait is under kitchen and bathroom cabinets.

Apply Dust Bait In Small Crevices
Dust bait is similar to gel bait, except it comes in the form of powder.
When roaches walk over the dust, it will get all over their bodies.
Because roaches regularly groom themselves by running their antennae and legs through their mouth, they will consume dust bait and die.
Use dust bait in locations that gel bait is unable to reach.
Dust bait comes with a small hand pump or tube, making them perfect for getting deep into small crevices and wall voids.
Dust baits are most effective when applied to small areas that are hard to reach with gel bait.
Its also great to apply to large areas where people wont usually go, like your attic or basement.
When using dust bait, only apply a very light layer.
One to two pumps is typically sufficient.
Cockroaches avoid thick layers of dust because it is hard to walk through.
Where Are These Safe Locations
For the three that will deposit their eggs in a safe location, how do we find the locations? Where in your house will they consider it safe to leave their precious babies?
To be honest, determining the exact location would be impossible to do. Who knows what goes through their head when they make up their mind and determine that theyve found the safest spot. That doesnt leave us completely in the dark though. We can still make some educated guesses.
We already know where they like to hide and what kind of environment they prefer. We also know of common locations where we can find them hiding. We also know about common areas where many eggs are frequently found. Using these bits of information increases our chances from our efforts.

Do Insecticides Work On Roach Eggs
Unfortunately, most insecticides will not work on roach eggs. The oothecae have a hard protective shell that stops the insecticide from reaching the eggs.
This applies to powders that must be consumed to kill the roaches. It wont work on roach eggs.
You can use a residual pesticide that will penetrate the egg sac and kill the embryos. Or you can use an Insect Growth Regulator which can both kill the embryo and cause developmental problems. The IGR often prevents the successful reproduction of roaches treated with this in the ootheca.
If you dont want to use a chemical pesticide, there is nothing you can do to the eggs, but you can deal with the nymphs. You can use a product that will kill them as soon as they are hatched or stops them from growing.
If you sprinkle boric acid on the oothecae, it will kill the nymphs as soon as they are hatched. Using a product that stops their growth will prevent them from developing into an adult, and they will not be able to reproduce.
There are other insecticides and baits that you can use to target the nymphs and adult cockroaches. Insecticides come in several forms, such as dust, sprays, and gels.
