I always knew that raising a child would be expensive, but I never knew that trying to have one could be until I discovered my husband and I needed fertility treatment.
One of the worst parts of in vitro fertilization was dealing with the financial burdens it created.
I had partial, limited fertility coverage, which seemed like the worst of both worlds: I had to deal with insurance, but it still did not cover everything. In the four years it took my husband and I to have a baby, I spent countless hours on the phone with insurance companies, pharmacies, doctors office billing departments and even shipping companies to understand my coverage, its cost and how to receive what I needed in time for treatment.
Now, after speaking with several fertility experts who deal with finances an economist studying fertility and insurance and parents, bloggers and advocates whove gone through I.V.F., Ive discovered some ways to make the financial process a little less painful.

Using The Buddy System Is A Must And Please Take The Day Off

The average cost of In Vitro Fertilization is most often quoted around $12,000 because thats what is stated by the Society of Reproductive Medicine and what is billed directly by a fertility clinic for a basic, no-frills, IVF cycle . Its important to note that this $12,000 average doesnt include any critical add on services like ICSI or IVF medications .
Although this average cost covers the minimum of what is required for an IVF cycle , saying In Vitro Fertilization costs an average of $12,000 is a false narrative as well over 99% of people add on services past this barebone IVF.
Egg Freezing Storage Cost
Lets be real, youre not freezing your eggs so they can be left in an igloo. Your eggs need to be stored in liquid nitrogen inside special cryotanks that are monitored regularly to make sure your investment is safely protected and preserved. That comes at a cost. It may not be much per day but like a cup of Starbucks coffee, those costs add up quite a bit over time.
Generally speaking, when someone freezes their eggs, they will be storing them for some relatively long period of time, think 3-10 years. The first six months to a year of storage is often included in the cost of the initial egg freezing procedure. And of course, like all things when talking about the cost of egg freezing, the cost of storage is incredibly variable from clinic to clinic with the average cost around $650 per year. The Province Of Ontario Pays For Fertility Treatments
Ontario residents with a valid OHIP card are eligible for Ontarios Fertility Program. To qualify for the one-time cycle per lifetime for IVF, women must be under the age of 43. You also must be recommended by your healthcare provider to ensure IVF is appropriate for you. If you live in a different province, youll need to check what fertility benefits are available to you.
The program covers the following
- Artificial insemination , including intra-uterine insemination
- One in vitro fertilization cycle per eligible patient per lifetime, including:
- The one-at-a-time transfer of all viable embryos to allow for the possibility of multiple chances for pregnancy
- One additional funded IVF cycle, if acting as a surrogate. This can occur either before or after receiving a funded IVF cycle for the purpose of building your own family
- One fertility preservation cycle, including sperm and egg freezing for medical reasons, per eligible patient per lifetime.

If youre pricing IVF at fertility clinics in the United States, expect to be quoted roughly $12,000 to $14,000 for one cycle. This, however, doesnt mean youll pay that figure and be done. While there is a lack of insurance coverage for egg freezing and the cost is prohibitive for many for some the cost of not freezing ones eggs may be even higher. For some , it is likely their only option of having a biological child. For those doing egg freezing for the elective reason of delaying motherhood, it very well could be the best and or most affordable option.
From a psychosocial perspective, the cost of not having a child or non biological child can be immeasurable. The financial burden of this choice can be equally problematic, if not more so than the cost of egg freezing. With the average cost of IVF and donor egg IVF teeters around $20,000 and $35,000 per attempt on average and the fact that many need more than one cycle, the costs can quickly outrun the cost of egg freezing.
What Is The Difference Between Ivf And Iui
Intrauterine insemination is different from in vitro fertilization because in an IUI procedure, fertilization occurs in a persons body. A sperm sample is collected and washed so only high-quality sperm are left. This sample is inserted into your uterus with a catheter during ovulation. This method helps the sperm get to the egg more easily in hope that fertilization will happen.
With IVF, the sperm and egg are fertilized outside of your uterus and then placed in your uterus as an embryo.
