I always knew that raising a child would be expensive, but I never knew that trying to have one could be until I discovered my husband and I needed fertility treatment.

One of the worst parts of in vitro fertilization was dealing with the financial burdens it created.

I had partial, limited fertility coverage, which seemed like the worst of both worlds: I had to deal with insurance, but it still did not cover everything. In the four years it took my husband and I to have a baby, I spent countless hours on the phone with insurance companies, pharmacies, doctors office billing departments and even shipping companies to understand my coverage, its cost and how to receive what I needed in time for treatment.

Now, after speaking with several fertility experts who deal with finances an economist studying fertility and insurance and parents, bloggers and advocates whove gone through I.V.F., Ive discovered some ways to make the financial process a little less painful.

Using The Buddy System Is A Must And Please Take The Day Off

New York State regulations require that an escort, like a friend or family member, accompany you home from the egg retrieval. Theyll be well taken care of in the waiting room during your procedure. We recommend you go straight home and relax for the rest of the day with a responsible adult by your side, just in case. We know, we knowsome of you will probably still go back to work, despite our pleas. But plan on staying out of the drivers seat for at least 24 hours.

After the egg retrieval process, you may experience some soreness in the vaginal area, some abdominal cramping, or some spotting, which could last a few days. Over-the-counter pain relievers such as Tylenol will help. Most women feel back to normal by the next day. You probably wont need a follow-up appointment, but the healthcare team will call and check in on you, just in case. If at any time if youre really bloated, throwing up, in a lot of pain, or otherwise feeling bad, give the healthcare team a call.

The actual value of your estradiol during IVF isnt as important as the overall trend and the number of ovarian follicles you have growing.

The more follicles you have growing, the higher your estradiol level will be.

We like to see approximately 200-300 pg/mL of estradiol per mature follicle by the day of the trigger shot.

For example, an E2 level of 1000 might yield 3-5 mature oocytes at the egg retrieval .

The Average Cost Of Ivf Billed By The Fertility Clinic: $12000

The average cost of In Vitro Fertilization is most often quoted around $12,000 because thats what is stated by the Society of Reproductive Medicine and what is billed directly by a fertility clinic for a basic, no-frills, IVF cycle . Its important to note that this $12,000 average doesnt include any critical add on services like ICSI or IVF medications .

Although this average cost covers the minimum of what is required for an IVF cycle , saying In Vitro Fertilization costs an average of $12,000 is a false narrative as well over 99% of people add on services past this barebone IVF.

    Egg Freezing Storage Cost

IVF Egg Retrieval – How Many Eggs?? (EMOTIONAL)

Lets be real, youre not freezing your eggs so they can be left in an igloo. Your eggs need to be stored in liquid nitrogen inside special cryotanks that are monitored regularly to make sure your investment is safely protected and preserved. That comes at a cost. It may not be much per day but like a cup of Starbucks coffee, those costs add up quite a bit over time.

Generally speaking, when someone freezes their eggs, they will be storing them for some relatively long period of time, think 3-10 years. The first six months to a year of storage is often included in the cost of the initial egg freezing procedure. And of course, like all things when talking about the cost of egg freezing, the cost of storage is incredibly variable from clinic to clinic with the average cost around $650 per year. Here at CNY Fertility we include the cost of the first year of storage in the price and charge $450/year afterwords.

The Province Of Ontario Pays For Fertility Treatments

Ontario residents with a valid OHIP card are eligible for Ontarios Fertility Program. To qualify for the one-time cycle per lifetime for IVF, women must be under the age of 43. You also must be recommended by your healthcare provider to ensure IVF is appropriate for you. If you live in a different province, youll need to check what fertility benefits are available to you.

    The program covers the following

    • Artificial insemination , including intra-uterine insemination
    • One in vitro fertilization cycle per eligible patient per lifetime, including:
    • The one-at-a-time transfer of all viable embryos to allow for the possibility of multiple chances for pregnancy
    • One additional funded IVF cycle, if acting as a surrogate. This can occur either before or after receiving a funded IVF cycle for the purpose of building your own family
    • One fertility preservation cycle, including sperm and egg freezing for medical reasons, per eligible patient per lifetime.

Obviously, most people are interested in taking advantage of IVF since it cost the most but note that this government program does not include the cost of drugs. As youve seen from my above estimates, you still be on the hook for about $5,000.

Some people ask, why not just go for the free stuff? If you elect to go for the sponsored method, youre put into a queue where the wait is about 12 months .

    How Much Does Ivf Cost

If youre pricing IVF at fertility clinics in the United States, expect to be quoted roughly $12,000 to $14,000 for one cycle. This, however, doesnt mean youll pay that figure and be done. There are parts of the IVF processsome required, some optionalthat most clinics treat as add-ons to the base fee. Depending on your needs, a single IVF cycle can cost $30,000 or more. More often, the total bill will fall somewhere between $15,000 and $20,000.

Often, a clinics base fee for IVF will cover monitoring appointments, bloodwork, egg retrieval and follow-up care. If youre quoted below $12,000, it might mean that the base fee covers less than whats listed above. If youre quoted above $14,000, the base fee might cover more. Always ask for a clear list of what the base fee includes and what will be charged as additional fees.

At most clinics, the quoted price doesnt cover the price of the injectable hormones, which can cost from $3,000 to more than $6,000, usually paid directly to the pharmacy filling the prescription.

Additional clinic fees may include intracytoplasmic sperm injection , genetic testing of embryos, a trial transfer and/or cryostorage fees for embryos you wish to preserve.

If youre using a sperm donor, egg donor, gestational carrier or surrogate, that may cost anywhere from an additional few hundred dollars for a sperm donation to tens of thousands of dollars for a carrier or surrogate.

The Cost Of Not Freezing Eggs

While there is a lack of insurance coverage for egg freezing and the cost is prohibitive for many for some the cost of not freezing ones eggs may be even higher. For some , it is likely their only option of having a biological child. For those doing egg freezing for the elective reason of delaying motherhood, it very well could be the best and or most affordable option.

From a psychosocial perspective, the cost of not having a child or non biological child can be immeasurable. The financial burden of this choice can be equally problematic, if not more so than the cost of egg freezing. With the average cost of IVF and donor egg IVF teeters around $20,000 and $35,000 per attempt on average and the fact that many need more than one cycle, the costs can quickly outrun the cost of egg freezing.

What Is The Difference Between Ivf And Iui

Intrauterine insemination is different from in vitro fertilization because in an IUI procedure, fertilization occurs in a persons body. A sperm sample is collected and washed so only high-quality sperm are left. This sample is inserted into your uterus with a catheter during ovulation. This method helps the sperm get to the egg more easily in hope that fertilization will happen.

With IVF, the sperm and egg are fertilized outside of your uterus and then placed in your uterus as an embryo.

IUI is less expensive and less invasive than IVF. IUI has a lower success rate per cycle.

How Many Eggs Will Be Retrieved

Some clinics provide an average number of eggs collected, but most clinics cannot say in advance how many eggs will be retrieved. It depends on how many mature follicles released eggs into the ovaries. Each woman will have her own fertility diagnosis, which certainly impacts the number of eggs. The fertility specialist will count the number of eggs retrieved and communicate that information.

The injectable medications prescribed before egg retrieval should be effective, and result in multiple mature eggs for collecting.

    Doing Multiple Egg Freezing Cycles

The truth is that many people will need to do multiple egg freezing cycles to feel confident that the number of eggs they have stored is enough to lead to pregnancy and birth later on. Thats the case for two primary reasons:

    • Many women, particularly those in their late thirties and beyond, dont make a large number of eggs even with the stimulation medications used in egg freezing.
    • There is a significant loss or funnel at nearly every step in the egg freezing and IVF process.

What do we mean by a loss at every step:

    • There are often more follicles seen during monitoring appointments than eggs that are actually retrieved.
    • Of the eggs that are retrieved, some likely will not be mature and can not be frozen.
    • Of the eggs that are frozen some likely wont survive the thaw.
    • Of those that survive the thaw, some likely wont actually fertilize when combined with sperm.
    • Of those that do do fertilize, some likely wont develop to the stage that most fertility clinics try to grow the embryos to in a lab before transferring them.
    • Of these embryos that can be transferred, only about half of embryo transfers result in live births .
