Why Do People Donate
It is not known why some countries have higher donation rates than others. In the case of egg donations, a study conducted at 2014 in eleven European countries pointed to a mixture of factors, combining financial reasons with altruistic reasons, and that could vary between different countries. Another study, carried out on sperm donors in Denmark and the United States, indicated that 20% would stop contributing their sperm if they were not financially compensated. In Portugal, another reason is added to the altruism and economic motivation of sperm donors, according to another study: it is a way to test whether the donor is fertile.
The countries of southern Europe, in general, keep the identity of the donors hidden, both for the people who receive their gametes and for future offspring
Anonymity, according to MartÃnez Navarro, also explains the high number of donors in Spain. In fact, the Spanish Fertility Society, opposes revealing the identity of donors in the future, as requested the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe in 2019 and the Spanish Bioethics Committee in 2020. Southern European countries, in general, hide the identity of donors, both for the people who receive the gametes and the offspring. The exception is Portugal, which in 2018 updated its policy following a Constitutional Court ruling.

All Types Of Women Donate Eggs
Levine says he sees many 22-year-olds, fresh from college, who are looking to pay off some of their student debt, as well as actors and artists looking to augment their income, and sometimes people who are very spiritual who dont want children personally, but want to know that there are children they helped make.
How To Choose An Egg Donor Agency
Egg donor agencies are not created equally. Some are better than others. Therefore, connecting with the right one could mean the difference between having a stressful, challenging experience and an amazing one. Here are a few things to consider when choosing the right egg donor agency for you:

If I Donate Now Will I Be Able To Have Children In The Future
There is no research supporting any adverse effect on your current or future fertility. About half of our donors are mothers already, and many eventually have children of their own following donation.
In addition to the overwhelming sense of fulfillment obtained from egg donation, donors will leave the process with significant information about their own fertility during and after donation. This, and the free genetic testing and counseling received prior to donation, provide insight that may eventually impact important personal life decisions and allow you to learn a little bit more about who you are.
Donating Sperm Pays Less
Compensation for sperm donation is much lower than that for egg donation. Why? On the one hand, the risks, discomfort, and time lost are lower for sperm donors, while egg donors must undergo more tests and hormonal treatments during the weeks before the extraction. A 1993 analysis noted that patients took 56 hours to donate eggs for every hour spent by sperm donors, a calculation that is still used today by the Society for Reproductive Medicine of the United States.
In the European Union, only eight countries set compensation for sperm donations. In absolute terms, Greece, at â¬200, and Germany, at â¬80–â¬150 at some sperm banks, pay the most. Denmark, one of the âmeccasâ of reproductive tourism, precisely because of the large number of sperm donors there, sets the limit at â¬67.20, while Portugal and Spain, at between â¬45 and â¬55, and Bulgaria, at just â¬15, set Europeâs lower limits. The United Kingdom sets its rate at about â¬41 per donation. However, according to Luis MartÃnez Navarro, president of the Spanish Fertility Society, it is normal for âa sperm donor to donate many times,â so the total amount they receive is higher.

What You Need To Know About Becoming An Egg Donor
If youve ever wondered about donating your eggs, but have a ton of questions about the process, youre not alone. Here, Dr. Brian Levine, of the Colorado Center for Reproductive Medicine in New York City, Dr. Kate Devine and Michele Purcell, RN, of Shady Grove Fertility in Washington D.C., answer some commonly asked questions about egg donation, what to expect from the process, and things to look out for to ensure your safety throughout the process.
Since The Screening Process Of Egg Donation Is So Intensive Only A Very Small Percentage Of People Whove Expressed An Interest In Donating Are Eligible To Donate
Rates vary from clinic to clinic, but this is due in part to the strict screening process. Levine says at his clinic only about 10% of people who do an initial screening make it to the second step. After that group is whittled down, usually only 10% of that second group makes it to the actual donation process. Levine says out of a hundred people who fill out a survey online, only one ends up becoming a viable egg donor. Purcell says at Shady Grove, they have around a 3-4% acceptance rate. Purcell notes that the majority of potential donors are washed out between the application process and the second stage. Sometimes women dont meet the age requirements for donation, sometimes they dont live locally enough , and BMI requirements are also responsible for a lot of drop outs.

How Many Times Can I Donate My Eggs
You can donate your eggs up to six times. After egg retrieval is complete, one of our admissions specialists will request the medical records from your egg donation cycle. An IVF physician will review your medical records and will make a recommendation as to whether you are able to return to the program to complete additional egg donation cycles.
Can I Donate More Than Once
If one of our physicians approves you to donate again, you may donate up to six times in your lifetime. Approximately 60 percent of cycling donors in any given month are repeat donors. About 2 months following your egg retrieval, a donor team physician will review your donation cycle and the recipient outcomes to determine your future eligibility. This review process can take up to 8 weeks. A Donor Liaison will contact you, update any consent forms, and upload your profile back into the donor registry. As long as all labs are up to date according to our protocol, you can go back on the registry immediately.

In the words of our donors
Its the excitement and joy that I feel knowing that I can help a family in such a special way that means the most to me. My next donation is already scheduled, and I plan to continue donating as long as recipients continue to choose me.
I felt so passionate and positive about my experience, I couldnt wait to share it with more women so that they, too, could experience the same.
For me, egg donation is a privilege and I consider myself lucky to be able to give in such a profound way. The first time I donated, I remember vividly how emotionally good I felt. Pure, simple goodness in the knowledge that I created hope where previously there had been none.
My mother struggled with fertility and had my wonderful brother with fertility treatments and I would love to give another family the chance to either start a family or expand their current family.
Are You Wonderingwill I Be Compensated
You might be wondering Do I get paid to donate my eggs? and How much will I get paid to donate my eggs?
The answer to the first question is Yes you do get paid, but it not for your eggs, it is for your time and effort.
In terms of the payment received for donating eggs, donor compensation is guided by the South African Medical Ethics committee and is currently set at between R8000 and R10000 depending on where you donate, how many times you donate and how far you are away from the fertility clinic. Donors who donate more than once will get increased compensation.

Why Do People Pay Egg Donors
Straight up: egg donors deserve to be compensated fairly. While donating your eggs is not a very difficult or time consuming process it is still a serious commitment. And while egg donation is very safe and most donors dont have any problems, like any medical procedure, there can be side effects to deal with. The risks may be very small, but they still exist.
Youre putting time and effort into this, youre agreeing to a bunch of blood tests and needles you wouldnt otherwise need to undergo, and most importantly, you are changing a familys world for ever. This is a big deal, and no one should ever tell you otherwise. You deserve to be rewarded. Compensation is a sign of respect and appreciation for doing something so selfless, and a recognition that your time, effort, and risk are valued.
