How to poach a perfect egg using a microwave in 60 seconds

The results from using this method to boil eggs may take a bit of trial and error. Every microwave seems to cook differently. When we got a new microwave, I had to adjust the amount of time I was cooking everything including our favorites that we cook almost every day.

The method I outlined below works well in our microwave but you may find you need to cook them for less time or for longer than I do.

What Is The Difference Between Fully Cooked And Hard Cooked Eggs

Youve probably heard of the term hard boiled eggs. But you may not know what a hard boiled egg is. Its simply an egg that has been boiled and then set aside to cool and solidify. This makes it easier to peel and makes the yolk more uniform in size. If youre looking for something to do with your eggs, then a hard boiled egg is a good choice. You can do a lot with them, including eating them plain, adding them to your morning cereal, or even having them as an appetizer for a dinner party. A hard boiled egg can be used in so many different ways, so its a versatile food. If youre looking for a healthier option, you can also steam your eggs, which is a great option for those looking to consume fewer calories.

How Long Is A Hard Boiled Egg

To get a hard-boiled egg, cook in the microwave for 5 minutes and then let the eggs sit in the hot water for 5-6 minutes. Then remove them and place them in an ice bath to cool.

These times will also depend on your specific model of microwave and you may want to play with the times a bit until you get your perfect egg.

The more firm you want your egg yolk, the longer you should allow it to sit in the hot water. Here are the times I recommend letting the eggs sit in the water:

  • Soft boiled Microwave eggs for 4 minutes. Remove the eggs from the hot water as soon as you take them out of the microwave and place them in an bowl of ice water to stop the cooking.
  • Hard boiled Microwave for 5-6 minutes . Let the eggs sit in the hot water for 5 minutes then place them in the ice bath. Leaving them in the hot water for more time allows the yolks to cook more.

Wattage And Cook Times

How To Hard Boil Eggs In Microwave

Not all microwaves have the same wattage. This is why your microwave at home might take only two minutes to warm leftovers, but the one in the break room at work takes nearly four minutes.

  • Youll need to experiment a little to see how long it takes to poach an egg in your microwave. You can start by looking for the wattage, if you like. Usually its found on the information panel on the back, though sometimes you can find it inside the microwave, or on the side of the door.
  • I poached eggs in a 700-watt microwave, and it took about 70 seconds to have one with a runny yolk and set whites. An 800-watt microwave took about the same time. No matter what the wattage, use high power when youre poaching your egg.

If you have a few imperfect eggs , dont freak out. Theyre only eggs, after all. When you get your egg the way you like, stick to that timing, but also keep using the same mug, if possible.

When the difference between a perfect-to-you poached egg and a disappointing poached egg can be 10 tiny seconds, its best to keep your variables constant.

Tip And Tricks On Making Perfect Hard Boiled Eggs In Microwave

  • Due to differences in microwaves, cooking time slightly varies. My microwave is 1000 watts and I cook them for 4 minutes or more depending on the number of eggs. Check the power of your microwave and place the timer accordingly.
  • If youre boiling four eggs, cook them for 4 minutes. If you add 2 more eggs to your bowl add another minute of cooking time.
  • Use a microwave safe bowl and place the eggs in the hot water. Make sure the eggs are completely submerged in the water.
  • Adding a 1/2 teaspoon of salt per egg is vital. The eggs will explode without the salt.

Are Eggs Gluten Free

Eggs are naturally gluten-free and dairy-free. Birds produce eggs, so there are no grains or lactose in this nutritious food. If someone with Celiac disease or who has a gluten sensitivity reacts to eggs, it is probably from cross contamination. This frequently happens when utensils are used when cooking other items with gluten. Common problems with cross contamination include dishes like French Toast and pancakes. If eggs are fried on the same surface, they are now contaminated.

If youre concerned about gluten in your diet, hard boiled eggs are a great choice. Cooked in their own shells, there is very little chance of coming in contact with gluten products. We have delicious recipes with eggs that are gluten free.

Why We Wont Make A Fried Egg In The Microwave

What about a fried egg in the microwave? Let’s just say it’s not our favorite method for making microwave eggs. According to the Egg Board, you should always break the yolk of an unbeaten egg with the tip of a knife or a wooden toothpick before microwaving. This allows steam from the yolk to escape safely.

Trouble is, as anyone who loves fried eggs knows, a fried egg with a broken yolk kind of misses the point. The good news is that it only takes about 8 minutes to fry an egg on the stove top the traditional way.

So, can you microwave eggs? Now you know the answer is yes, but with a few caveats. To recap, scrambled microwave eggs and our fun Mason Jar eggs turn out best, and poached microwave eggs can be very good, too. As for the rest? Stick with the stove top or a fancy electric egg cooker for the best results.

Why Does My Coolant Boil

How to Boil Eggs in the Microwave Oven – Without foil – Updated 2015

When theres a leak in the cooling system, the pressure of the liquid drops and so does the boiling point of the coolant/antifreeze. Cooling systems are pressurised to raise the boiling point of the fluid, with the pressure cap and the overflow helping to raise the temperature at which the coolant/antifreeze boils.

How To Know If Your Eggs Arent Cooked Properly

The shell is not coming off, the yolks being too runny, the eggs not being cooked properly, or the eggs simply exploding are all problems you may run into.

The most likely cause is that you didnt follow the instructions carefully. Of course, there could be other issues, like using the wrong kind of salt, and iodized salt is the best one to use. You can check out my other post on the perfect boiled egg for guidance on how to test your eggs.

Tips On How To Boil Eggs In Microwave

Once the microwave has come to temperature , reduce it to 50% for roughly two minutes. This will ensure the egg is heated through without being overcooked.

After this point, you can choose to leave your eggs in for another 30 seconds or so at 50% power before turning it off completely and allowing them to finish cooking on their own.

If you are cooking multiple eggs at a time, they need to be separated by about 3-4 inches. This helps ensure that they cook evenly.

In addition, hard boiled eggs should always be cooled gradually as opposed to being left in the fridge or with lots of water since this can lead to cracks and unevenness in yolks.

Always use fresh eggs

Eggs that are placed in the microwave should not be used after they have been sitting for about three to four weeks, as older eggs tend to cook unevenly.

This is because as an egg age, its membranes begin to break down and it loses moisture through pores on its shell. The water that was absorbed into the egg begins to escape, which makes cooking the egg much more difficult especially if you are microwaving it.

Cooking time may vary due to the model of microwave used

Be sure the eggs are covered by water at all times

It is very important that your eggs remain completely submerged in water while microwaving them this ensures even cooking throughout. If there is not enough water surrounding your eggs it will result in cooked egg whites and raw egg yolks.

How Long Do You Cook An Egg In The Microwave

Youve probably seen this question asked on social media a million times. But, can you actually tell the time when its cooking in the microwave? The answer is that it depends on what youre cooking and how youre using it. Its recommended that you cook eggs with half the quantity of ingredients recommended by the microwaves instructions. In that case, it should cook within three to five minutes.

    Are Microwaved Eggs Healthy

Microwaved eggs are just as healthy, if not more so than oven-cooked eggs. Depending on how long you cook them and what you cook them with, you can maximize an eggs nutrition using a microwave.

Certified food scientist Guy Crosby, Ph.D., says you can lose anywhere from 80 to 90 percent of nutrients when you roast, bake or fry food because nutrients cant withstand dry heat. However, microwaves cook food faster, exposing nutrients to heat for less time. Nutrients like B1, B2, B6, vitamin C, and folic acid tend to fare better in the microwave.

Nevertheless, heat is destructive. Sometimes, this is a good thing. For example, heat kills harmful bacteria, like salmonella. When it comes to eggs, its also beneficial to cook the egg whites until theyve solidified. Egg whites contain 57 percent of an eggs protein. Heat helps our bodies process the protein in egg whites. Protein in cooked eggs is 180 percent more digestible than in uncooked eggs.

With that said, the bulk of nutrients exist in an eggs yolk. To retain the most nutrients in eggs, you should avoid overcooking the yolks. For example, one study found that eggs only retained 39 to 45 percent of vitamin D when baked in the oven for 40 minutes at a normal cooking temperature, while frying resulted in 82 to 84 percent vitamin D retention. Also, overheating the yoke oxidizes the fat in the yolks, which can make them sticky and hard for the body to use.
