If The Problem Is In The Water Heater

Unless you are very familiar with water heater operation and maintenance, have a plumber or water system professional to do the work.

  • Replace or remove the magnesium anode. Many water heaters have a magnesium anode, which is attached to a plug located on top of the water heater. It can be removed by turning off the water, releasing the pressure from the water heater, and unscrewing the plug. Be sure to plug the hole. Removal of the anode, however, may significantly decrease the life of the water heater. You may wish to consult with a water heater dealer to determine if a replacement anode made of a different material, such as aluminum, can be installed. A replacement anode may provide corrosion protection without contributing to the production of hydrogen sulfide gas.
  • Disinfect and flush the water heater with a chlorine bleach solution. Chlorination can kill sulfur bacteria. If all bacteria are not destroyed by chlorination, the problem may return within a few weeks.
  • Increase the water heater temperature to 160 degrees Fahrenheit for several hours. This will destroy the sulfur bacteria. Flushing to remove the dead bacteria after treatment should control the odor problem.

Sign Of An Electrical Short

How to Fix Your Water – Rotten Egg Smell (Sulfur)

If youre having trouble starting your car, you may have an electrical short. If this happens, you should take your car to a professional to get it diagnosed. You should also keep an eye out for any strange smells coming from your car. One common odor is burning plastic, or you may smell electrical insulation. As soon as you notice these odors, you should not drive the car. You might end up doing further damage if you do.

If you can smell burning, the electrical system is overheating. Turn off the appliances and outlets that are affected and call an electrician to fix the problem. If you see any burning or charred material, stop using them immediately. Fire can start from an electrical short, so make sure to unplug them. You can also shut off power to the outlet to avoid any more damage. Once youve ruled out any other possibility, contact a qualified electrician and have them look at the problem.

A Bleach Chemical Or Medicinal Odor

Public water suppliers generally chlorinate water to prevent bacterial growth. Typical levels of free chlorine in drinking water from PWS are 0.2 – 2.0 parts per million , though levels can be as high as 5.0 ppm. Odors resulting from a chlorine addition usually go away if the water is exposed to air for several minutes.

Adding chlorine to the water through shock chlorination of a well or plumbing system produces a strong bleach odor. The bleach smell stops when chlorine completely dissipates. This requires turning on outside faucets and letting the water run until the smell is gone.

In some cases, the added chlorine may interact with organic materials built up in the plumbing system and add odor to the water. The odor should disappear after running the water for a few minutes. Use Figure 1 to locate the source of the odor. If water is supplied by your own well and the problem appears to be in your plumbing and/or well systems, then your entire water system should be flushed, preferably by a licensed well driller or pump installer. If you are on a PWS and the problem appears to be the water supply line, contact your water supply authority.

How Do I Keep My Plumbing Pipes Clean

When it comes to keeping your plumbing pipes clean, one of the best ways is to be careful of what you put down them. Substances like hair, coffee grounds, cooking grease, and soap scum are your biggest enemies. To keep your drain free of these substances, try running hot water down the drain after every use. It also helps to add tablespoons of baking soda to the water. This is a great deodorizer and can take away debris like hair and toothpaste that would otherwise stick to the drain pipe and lead to problems like odors.

Some other ways to keep the plumbing pipes clean include:

    • Wash your pets outside if the weather allows it, which will prevent pet hair and dander from getting down the drain
    • Use mesh traps on open drains, which will prevent soap and hair from making its way into the drains
    • Brush hair before bathing in order to keep it from making its way down the drain
    • Invest in a quality plunger that will clear out any blockages

    How To Eliminate The Problem

    • Install a Water Filter: A whole house water filtration system may be the best answer to your problem. Not only can it eliminate the odor, but it will also improve the overall quality of your water.
    • Clear Your Pipes: This is done by turning on all the faucets in your home and letting them run for a period of 5 to 10 minutes. After that, turn off the water and wait a few minutes before testing. By clearing out the pipes, you may be able to remove the smell once and for all.
    • Clear and Clean Your Water Heater: If the smell is coming from your water heater, turn it off and flush it entirely. Once empty, refill it, turn it up to 160 degrees, and let it run for several hours. This is usually enough to kill any bacteria.
