English Muffin And Egg Breakfast Bakes

For a slightly new twist on the classic breakfast bake, try adding English muffins to the next casserole you make. Whip up this meal on a slow Saturday or Sunday morning when you have all the time in the world to get the ingredients just right and thoroughly enjoy this savory dish. Youll thank yourself for taking the time to put this hearty casserole together.

To make an English muffin and egg breakfast bake, procure these ingredients and follow these steps:

  • 6 English muffins, split into 1-inch pieces
  • 1 red bell pepper, diced
  • 2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper

Coat a 9-by-13-inch cooking pan with nonstick cooking spray. Break the muffins up into 1-inch pieces and spread them on a baking sheet, then toast until nicely browned for about 15 minutes.

While the muffins bake, heat a skillet over medium-high heat and add the ground sausage, white onion, and bell pepper, cooking until the sausage is browned. Remove from the heat and transfer the sausage and vegetables to a plate. Once the muffin pieces are done, layer them along the bottom of the casserole dish along with the sausage mixture and cheese. Reserve a half cup of the cheese.

Whisk the eggs, milk, salt, and pepper in a bowl and pour it over the casserole, and add the remaining cheese on top. Cover the dish and let it refrigerate for at least 2 hours.

Egg Mcmuffin Improvement #: The Ingredients

Bacon and Egg English Muffins – with *Cheese!*

The first step to a better sandwich is better ingredients. An Egg McMuffin has four:

  • A standard-issue, soft English muffin
  • A factory-farmed egg
  • A slice of perfectly round Canadian bacon
  • A slice of orange American cheese

I started by replacing the English muffins with super high-end English muffins from The Model Bakery in Northern California , but they were simply too good. The McMuffin lost its essential McMuffininess. Instead, I used a good quality supermarket brand.

The eggs were an easy upgrade. Although I know that in blind taste tests, factory-farmed eggs are indistinguishable from “better” eggs , but simply knowing my eggs are coming from chickens that are treated well is enough to make them taste better to me.

Canadian bacon is essentially cured pork loin that has been sliced. The stuff McDonald’s uses is perfectly round, which means it’s probably more like chopped-and-formed ham. It lacks the meaty bite of real Canadian bacon. Look for stuff that is sliced from whole pork loins, which has the added benefit of providing a little ring of fat around the outside that crisps up as you fry it.

Finally, for the cheese: American works great and is hard to improve upon for a sandwich like this in which the primary goal is easy meltability, but if you want a little more flavor, a slice of cheddar, Swiss, or jack will do. Remember: firmer, drier cheese doesn’t melt as well. Plan accordingly.

How To Store And Reheat Breakfast Egg Bites

The best way to enjoy these delicious, cheesy muffins or egg bites is to enjoy them while they are freshly prepared and slightly warm.

As you keep them, these egg muffins may slightly collapse .

This is because they are made without any flour & they are made without any rising agents like baking powder or baking soda.

The eggs in the muffins are what that help them to rise while we bake them, and as we keep them for more time, they may not hold up well.

If you keep this outside in the room temperature for more than few hours, its a good idea to refrigerate them in proper air tight containers so they stay fresh for longer time.

You may store this in the refrigerator for a couple of days if you store them properly.

If you want to store these for longer, you may freeze the egg bites or muffins in freezer safe containers so they stay fresh for even more longer time.

To reheat the egg bites which were stored in the refrigerator, you can transfer them to microwave safe plates and heat for about 40 to 50 seconds time.

If you are freezing the egg & cheese breakfast muffins, you will need to heat them for little more time so they can be served warm as you need.

Egg In A Hole On An English Muffin

Egg in a hole is often made with slices of toast, but you can try an English muffin for a slightly different spin on this classic morning meal. The best part of this meal is that it can easily transform into a sandwich, offering you a more substantial breakfast to ensure youre full and energized for the day ahead.

Make egg in a hole with an English muffin by gathering these ingredients and following these steps:

  • 2 English muffins, halved
  • 2 sausage patties
  • 2 slices of your favorite cheese

Use a round cookie cutter to hollow out a hole in each muffin top, saving the cut-out centers. Spread softened butter on the top and bottom halves and centers. Heat a skillet over medium heat and toast the muffin bottoms and centers until lightly toasted. Transfer to a plate.

Add the muffin tops to the pan and crack an egg in each hole, sprinkling a pinch of salt and pepper over each. Cook for about 1 to 3 minutes and flip. If you prefer sunny side up eggs, toast both sides of the muffin tops first before cracking in the eggs.

Using the same pan, cook the sausage patties. After you flip them, add the cheese slices on top and cook until the sausage is browned. To assemble your sandwich, place the patties on the bottom halves of the muffins and top with the egg-in-a-hole muffin tops. Use the centers you saved for dipping into the egg yolk.

Serious Eats

McDonald’s English muffins aren’t bad per se, but there are few things in life that can’t be improved with more butter and more browning. I tested toasting English muffins through various methods, including in a toaster, under a broiler, and directly over a gas flame. The best way to prepare one for a sandwich is to lightly butter the surface, then place it face down in a moderately hot nonstick or cast iron skillet.

The real key is you can’t just leave it there. If you do, as it heats up, the outer edges will contract, causing the English muffin to cup upwards and away from the pan. You end up with a muffin that is toasted only around the outside edges. For optimal browning , you must gently press down on the center of the muffin halves as they toast, rotating and swirling them around.

A nice, even golden brown is what you’re after, and moderately low heat with plenty of motion is the way to get there.
