Starbucks is, first and foremost, a coffee brand, so with today’s announcement of the chain’s summer menu, per usual, the new beverages were announced first even though neither of them are coffee-based.

Meanwhile, as more and more chains have jumped on the chicken sandwich bandwagon, that fervor certainly has fallen from its former highs. And yet, despite its relatively unceremonious launch, the facts remain: Starbucks has just launched its first chicken sandwich as a breakfast menu item, no less.

Debuting today, the first day of summer, the Chicken Maple Butter and Egg Sandwich features breaded white meat chicken, fluffy eggs, and a maple butter spread on a toasted oat biscuit roll for what Starbucks describes as “a satisfying and savory sandwich with a hint of sweetness.” A brand spokesperson confirmed to us that, indeed, this new permanent menu item is the first time a chicken sandwich has landed on at Starbucks stores in the U.S.

In the endless rollout of new chicken sandwiches since Popeyes blew the doors of the phenomenon in 2019, breakfast chicken sandwiches certainly haven’t been unheard of with both McDonald’s and Wendy’s giving it a whirl so it’s a sensible place for Starbucks to start.

Still, Starbucks preferred to keep the focus on its two new summer beverages: the Pineapple Passionfruit Starbucks Refresher and Paradise Drink Starbucks Refresher, both of which are also joining the permanent menu.

The breakfast bite was launched on June 21 of this year, and only a couple of days later the coffee chain had to quickly dropped the option from the menu indefinitely. According to Food& Wine, a Starbucks spokesperson claimed that the sandwich was removed for not keeping up with quality standards. At the time, many customers and even fellow Starbucks baristas were making complaints on social media that they were experiencing food-borne illness symptomssuch as diarrhea, vomiting, and stomach painafter eating the discontinued product. While Starbucks and/or the FDA never formally recalled the item for these alleged reasons, the chicken breakfast sammy still hasn’t made it back to stores since.

Starbucks’ Sandwich Did Not Meet Quality Standards

Unfortunately for chicken sandwich fans, Starbucks’ breakfast sandwich was not long-lived. After it was unveiled, reports were made on social media that some people were sicken by the sandwich, but none of the claims were ever verified, reports NBC News. Starbucks says the allegations that the sandwich caused illnesses are not accurate, explaining that it pulled the chicken sandwich because it did not meet the company’s quality standards, according to Today. “The quality issue that was identified by Starbucks would not lead to food borne illness and any reports linking the stop sale to illness are inaccurate,” Starbucks said in a statement.

The Wall Street Journal said the Starbucks breakfast sandwich wasn’t listed on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration website as a product that might have caused a food-borne illness. Starbucks said that stopping the sale of a food item is not unheard of and in this situation was done out of caution, according to NBC News.

Reviews of the Starbucks chicken sandwich also weren’t very positive, with Bon Appétit calling it “bland” and a review on The Takeout saying it didn’t have much flavor and that the chicken was a real letdown.

The recall comes shortly after a handful of messages about the sandwich surfaced on the crowdsourced website iwaspoisoned.com. According to several users, they experienced painful stomach issues after eating the Chicken, Maple Butter and Egg Sandwich.

“Their chicken maple sandwich was recalled recently and I ate one on 6/24.. which makes sense now as i have been having diarrhea and feeling nauseous,” one user based in Anaheim, California wrote.

Despite the claims from customers, Starbucks has announced that the decision to stop selling the sandwich was not due to any food borne illnesses it caused.

“The quality issue that was identified by Starbucks would not lead to food borne illness and any reports linking the stop sale to illness are inaccurate,” Starbucks said in a statement.

Starbucks added that this was not a FDA-issued recall and shared that their voluntary recall was “because the product didn’t meet Starbucks quality standards.”

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration did not immediately respond to a request for comment, but Starbucks said the agency has not issued a recall. Its database did not include any complaints about the item Friday afternoon.

Starbucks said withdrawing food products based on quality issues is not unusual or newsworthy, and that this was done “with an abundance of caution.”

Bryan Hitchcock, a vice president at the Institute of Food Technologists in Chicago, said by email that Starbucks’ relatively swift action to remove an offering that didn’t meet its standards is “commendable.”
