Tips To Microwave Boiled Eggs

Can You Boil Eggs In The Microwave : Boiled Eggs In The Microwave ...

As with all cooking, there are different ways to achieve similar results. For whole boiled eggs, the main concern is all about the potential of an explosion. You can easily overcome this issue with a few advanced preparations.

For the best outcomes, here are some important tips that Ill strongly recommend you to follow when microwaving boiled eggs:

  • Use salt water for boiling the eggs. Salt lowers the boiling point and reduces the intense heat that can cause the egg to explode.
  • Lightly prick the bottom section of the egg with a safety pin or any thumbtack. This allow room for the egg to expand as pressure builds up inside the shell.
  • Be careful about the cooking time. For soft-boiled eggs, the cooking time will be less as you are opting for the runny yolks. But, if you are going for the hard-boiled eggs, then you should increase the cooking time a bit more so that it results in a solid yolk.
  • Use microwave-safe cooking bowl. This tip is applicable to all preparations that you are trying out in the microwave.
  • Be aware of the quantity of water. It should be deep enough to submerge the egg with at least 1 of water above the top of the egg. However, too much water will result in a boil over.

Why Do My Hard Boiled Eggs Turn Green

A: The green ring around the yolk of a hard cooked egg happens because hydrogen in the egg white combines with sulfur in the yolk. The cause is most often related to boiling the eggs too hard for too long. Immediately run cold water over the eggs. This helps the green from forming around the yolks.

How Long Can You Cook Eggs In A Microwave

How to Microwave a Hard Boiled Egg

Buying an electric egg cooker is one way to make a quick dinner. However, cooking eggs in a microwave is a much simpler way. Boiling eggs in a microwave can be done in a number of different ways, depending on how you want the egg cooked. If youre looking to boil eggs that are hard-boiled and dont have a lot of flavor, you can simply microwave them until theyre soft. This takes approximately two minutes for each one-cup egg. Boiling eggs in a microwave will cook them faster and it will result in much more even cooking than cooking them in a pan. If you want your eggs to be harder-boiled, you can cook them in a microwave for about five minutes and theyll be a little firmer and more cooked than when they are soft. You can also use a microwave to cook eggs that are not hard-boiled. For example, if you want your eggs to be the consistency of omelets, you can set a smaller amount of eggs in a microwave and heat it for about two minutes, then flip the eggs. Youll end up with omelet consistency eggs.

Can Raw Eggs Explode In The Microwave

Without the necessary precaution, boiling a raw egg in a microwave can result in an explosion. If you boil an egg in a microwave, piercing or poking it will allow the trapped air to escape from underneath the eggshell, reducing the pressure inside the shell.

An egg is transformed from a plasma state into a solid-state when placed in boiling water, and it gains rubber properties. As an egg solidifies, some of its water content is superheated. The superheated water boils spontaneously in the air when the egg is cracked, hence the explosion.

A recent study established that the yolk of an egg when cooking in a microwave has a higher temperature than the boiling water. This could probably be the cause of the explosion. To me, it sounds like the egg becomes a superheated sauna or a pressure cooker of sorts.

In the same study, the exploding eggs produced a sound of over 100 decibels, which is equivalent to being close to a running motorcycle. While the sound occurs for a short time and wont cause any physical damage, you can still imagine the mess it will create inside the microwave.

However, you dont need to worry about explosions following the simple outlined step. Always remember to pierce the eggs or add salt to the boiling bowl.

Are Microwaved Eggs Healthy

Microwaved eggs are just as healthy, if not more so than oven-cooked eggs. Depending on how long you cook them and what you cook them with, you can maximize an eggs nutrition using a microwave.

Certified food scientist Guy Crosby, Ph.D., says you can lose anywhere from 80 to 90 percent of nutrients when you roast, bake or fry food because nutrients cant withstand dry heat. However, microwaves cook food faster, exposing nutrients to heat for less time. Nutrients like B1, B2, B6, vitamin C, and folic acid tend to fare better in the microwave.

Nevertheless, heat is destructive. Sometimes, this is a good thing. For example, heat kills harmful bacteria, like salmonella. When it comes to eggs, its also beneficial to cook the egg whites until theyve solidified. Egg whites contain 57 percent of an eggs protein. Heat helps our bodies process the protein in egg whites. Protein in cooked eggs is 180 percent more digestible than in uncooked eggs.

With that said, the bulk of nutrients exist in an eggs yolk. To retain the most nutrients in eggs, you should avoid overcooking the yolks. For example, one study found that eggs only retained 39 to 45 percent of vitamin D when baked in the oven for 40 minutes at a normal cooking temperature, while frying resulted in 82 to 84 percent vitamin D retention. Also, overheating the yoke oxidizes the fat in the yolks, which can make them sticky and hard for the body to use.

Cracking And Covering The Egg

  • 1Grease a microwave-safe bowl with butter. Rub the inside of a small, microwave-safe bowl with butter using a paper towel. Custard ramekins work well if you are only cooking 1 egg, but you can use any size container.XResearch source
  • You can also use olive oil spray instead of butter.
  • 2Sprinkle 1/2 tsp of salt into the bowl. You dont have to be super accurate with your measurements of salt, but try to use enough to cover the bottom surface of your container. Salt will help the egg cook evenly, and may give it some more flavor.XResearch source
  • You can put more salt on the egg after its cooked if youd like to.
  • 3Crack the egg into the bowl. Tap the side of the egg onto the side of the bowl, then pull open the shell. Let the egg white and the yolk fall into the bowl, being careful not to include any of the shell.XResearch source
  • You can cook more than 1 egg at a time, but it may not cook as evenly.
  • 4Pierce the egg yolks with a knife or a fork. Even the thin membrane holding the yolk together will build up pressure as the moisture inside heats up, which can lead to an exploding egg. Prevent this by piercing each yolk with the tip of a knife, skewer, or fork 3 to 4 times each.XResearch source

Warning: It is super important that you pierce the yolk before you put the eggs in the microwave. If you dont, the hot eggs could explode on you and cause serious injury.

  • Never use aluminum foil in the microwave, or you could start a fire.
  • Can You Microwave Boiled Eggs Without Shell

Can You Boil Eggs In The Microwave : Reheating Boiled Eggs In The ...

The answer is yes but we dont recommend it!

While it is technically possible to microwave a boiled egg without its shell, doing so comes with a number of risks.

Without the protective barrier of the shell, the egg is more likely to explode in the microwave. This can be extremely dangerous, as hot egg bits can cause serious burns.

Additionally, microwaving an egg without its shell can cause it to dry out and become rubbery. So if youre looking for the perfect boiled egg, its best to stick to the tried-and-true method of boiling water on the stovetop.

Ive seen lots of advice on boiling eggs in the microwave from not doing it at all to poking a hole in the bottom of each egg with a thumbtack before boiling to prevent eggs exploding. I have never poked a hole in the bottom of the eggs, but I use salt in the water. I havent had an egg explosion yet.

Its very important you either add the salt OR you poke holes. Otherwise, there is a very real chance your eggs could explode. Wet egg and shell splattered all over the microwave does not sound fun at all to clean up.

I tend to like medium boiled eggs where the yolk is not completely firm but also not runny. They are perfect for breakfast. Its almost like eating fried eggs. I love them sliced up and put on top of a couple slices of sourdough toast.

However, if you want to make some tuna salad or egg salad or chop a boiled egg in just a regular green salad, I recommend boiling your eggs until they are hard boiled with firm yolks.
